BENCH AND A TREE

Playful

If Calvin can have Hobbes,ย
why shouldnโ€™t Mother and Iย
create an imaginary world,
ย
assigning names and personalities
to the assortment of stuffed animals
perched on her bed eavesdropping
ย
on our daily chair chat conversations?ย ย
They were our buddies, our kids,
our family, our audience to
ย
the fun-filled, off-key, daily renditionย
of โ€œOh, What a Beautiful Morning.โ€ย
One New Yearโ€™s Day, we decidedย
ย
to draw names from Dadโ€™s mug to decide
who might accompany us down the hallย
to watch the Rose Bowl, a gameย
ย
in which he once played. And thenย
it became ritual for playoffs, holidays
โ€”everyone with an equal chanceโ€”
ย
save banana breakfasts.ย
On those mornings, the โ€œboysโ€
(a monkey, a chimp, a gorilla)
ย
were assured a place at the tableย
so that I might read to them
โ€œBanana Schoolโ€ย by Billy Collins.ย
ย
Reading poems is what poets do,ย
unless it was a โ€œTut-tut, it looks like rainโ€
kind of day. Then it wasย The World of Pooh
ย
and Teddy, the stuffed bear from Dad,
would have the prized perch on Motherโ€™s lap.ย
Unless Piglet appeared, then it wasย
ย
Little Puppyโ€™s turn, with her black and whiteย
spots. If Owl, then Big Bird. If Rabbit, then
a chewed remnant of Ladyโ€™s favorite toy.ย
ย
One Sunday, three months before
her ninety-ninth birthday, Mother left home
and did not return. Her bed, their home,
ย
disappeared. As the buddies balancedย
precariously on a bedside table, I triedย
to explain the unexplainable. Her death.
ย
Almost as hard, to let them knowย
many would be moving to new homes
to live with Motherโ€™s other children.
ย
โ€œBut you will always be in my heart,โ€
I assured them. โ€œForever buddies.
Forever family.โ€ย
ย
I read Calvin and Hobbes to those left,
the books a gift from Dad as if he knewย
I might forget the value in remaining playful.ย
