A BENCH AND A TREE

her death

Feb 9, 2026 | 0 comments

1.

enticing blue skies
last lingering leaf conflicted
those final hours

2.

heart sliced by pain
onslaught of torrential rain
swimming to the sky

our familiar bench
bare limbs of locust drenched
ground littered with leaves

orphan in shadows
halting hoot of the Horn
ravine with no reply

3.

sun piercing snow clouds
lilted song of tufted titmouse
I lift my pen.

This poem about Mother’s death and life without her was influenced by:

  • a Japanese form of poetry called Haiku, popularized by Matsuo Bashõ in the 1670’s. An image-based 3-line poem, it follows a syllable guideline of five, seven, five.
  • The Fall of Freddie the Leaf, by Leo Buscaglia, a children’s book about life and death gifted me by Mother.
