Absorbed in the hunt for the blazing fire of the hawkweed and the velvety pouch of the Lady’s-slipper, at first, I do not see the stubby legs of the snapping turtle digging so purposely in the stony soil. That can be the downside of goals. And yet, there is something urgent in her eyes, a silent plea, that causes me to back away, to watch from afar as she plunges face-first into the dirt, singularly-focused, intent on burrowing a hole for her eggs, determined to finish her work and return to the river. |

The McKSchmidt Questions: Week 5
A Grassroots Effort to Prioritize Our Water
Question: Before summer slips away, will you take an hour to walk, alone, along the shores of one of our Great Lakes? Or wander along a trail through a forest in one of our state or national parks? Or bicycle along a river edged in native wildflowers? If you can shed the burden of so much responsibility for a short while and absorb the sacred beauty of this place we call home, I suspect you will join hands with all of us trying so hard to protect it. Will you do that?
