Sculpench
Sitting in our garden is a Philippine bench. Or is it a sculpture? It’s a bench. No, it’s a sculpture. It’s a sculpench. Spouse Julie was raised on Subic Bay, the Philippines. Her father, a Navy Captain, commanded the base. How this sculpted black bench with twisted legs and a half open, half “ovaled” back crossed the sea in one carved piece is long forgotten. But here among the hosta it sits. Incidentally Julie’s father commanded a destroyer heading to Cuba during the 1962 missile crisis. President Kennedy, as you know, radioed to turn the ships around.

If only we could turn around all the missiles, drones, and automatic weapons pointed at innocent people. If only we took a minute to sit on a bench and think about one act of kindness we might do for another. Perhaps the earth would smile again. Perhaps we’d notice it’s trying.
